County Veteran Service Officer Week 2010

Governor Pawlenty has proclaimed June 6 to 12, 2010 to be County Veteran Service Officer Week. The proclamation reads:

WHEREAS: County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs) are local government employees who assist thousands of veterans and their families in filing for federal and state benefits for veterans; and
WHEREAS: CVSOs were first established in some states after the Civil War; and
WHEREAS: CVSOs understand the problems that confront veterans, widows, widowers, and children, and know the meaning and application of the laws passed by the U.S. Congress in the interests of veterans and their dependents; and
WHEREAS: CVSOs have an extremely high success rate of securing veterans benefits. Over the past 10 years, CVSOs have brought in more than $1 billion in new veterans benefits to Minnesota veterans; and
WHEREAS: The National Association of County Veteran Services Officers (NACVSO) was established 20 years ago in Minnesota and includes more than 1,500 members in 35 states; and
WHEREAS: All CVSOs belonging to NACVSO are accredited by the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs and have cross accreditation agreements with other veteran service organizations; and
WHEREAS: The Minnesota Association of County Veteran Service Officers is hosting this year's national conference in Bloomington from June 6 - 12, 2010, with CVSOs from approximately 22 states in attendance.
Now, THEREFORE, I, TIM PAWLENTY, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim the week of June 6 - 12, 2010, as COUNTY VETERAN SERVICE OFFICER WEEK in the State of Minnesota.
